The Office of Research (OR) serves as the catalyst for advancing
the research mission at UC Davis. The OR currently oversees 41
research units including 7 Organized Research Units, 13 Special
Research Programs, 17 Designated Core Facilities, and 4 IMPACT
Centers. In addition, OR oversees 18 Administrative Units including
10 Research & Compliance units, 3 Interdisciplinary Research &
Strategic Initiatives units, 2 Innovation and Technology
Commercialization units, 1 Research Core Facility Program, and 2
Animal Care Programs. The Office of Research annual expenditures,
recharge, and income is approximately $210 Million annually. OR
oversees campus-wide research funding programs of $3.2 Million
The Business & Finance Unit has financial oversight and
responsibility for all units reporting to the Office of Research
which encompasses the 41 research units, special research programs,
and core facilities in addition to 18 administrative units, the 2
Animal Care Programs, and several campus-wide programs.

The Technical Director of the UC Davis High Performance Computing
Core Facility (HPCCF) reports directly to the HPCCF Scientific
Director. The Technical Director is charged with leading HPCCF
system administrators in the development and maintenance of
cutting-edge research computing systems with an emphasis in high
performance computing, distributed data storage systems,
high-speed/low-latency networking, and scientific and research
computing. Daily operational support to include:
maintenance/repairs and other related information technology
services; developing business plans, budgets, and long term
strategic goals; designing, developing and implementing new HPCCF
computing systems, data management systems, networking
infrastructure, and user services including training; providing
user and resource accounting statistics for advisory committees,
Scientific Director and grant reporting; communicating and
interacting effectively with individuals at all levels of the
University so as to establish HPC support for strategic technology
initiatives and develop project requirements, limitations and
needs. The Technical Director of HPCCF has the primary
responsibility of representing the core to the local, regional and
national pertinent communities.
The position impacts academic researchers in all UCD
schools/colleges. The leadership team (Scientific Director,
Technical Director) of the HPCCF reports to the Vice-Chancellor
Research VCR as a research core facility. The focus of the HPCCF is
to focus on the needs on the of researchers in all UCD

-Ability to stoop, bend, use an 8 foot ladder, and lift up to 35
lbs to maneuver computing equipment. A handcart is available.

-B.S. or B.A. degree in Computer Science or related field, and 5+
years of high performance computing experience or a combination of
equivalent education and experience; graduate degree in related
field and 3+ years of high performance computing experience.
-Systems administration experience in large-scale Linux
environments; experience with networking hardware and software;
experience building, maintaining and tuning high performance
computing systems and software with associated cluster interconnect
networking and data storage hardware; experience in software
engineering and automated deployments.
-Experience in developing, reviewing and implementing standard
operating procedures and policies; supervisory and budget authority
of an organizational unit and staff; planning and coordinating a
program, managing grants/contracts; providing liaison with
customer/provider groups; and interpreting federal or state
-Demonstrated management, conflict resolution and leadership
-Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
-Experience in an academic environment with the setup and
administration of production servers and services including: web
servers, IPv6, DNS, DHCP, scalable data storage systems, databases
and backup services.
-Experience with virtualization and cloud technologies.
-Ability to communicate effectively with diverse user community
orally and in writing, including: students and scientists with a
broad range of systems expertise, students and scientists with much
systems expertise, educators, administrators, and vendors.
-Demonstrated knowledge of developing and executing business plans
including strong customer service orientation with experience in
developing technical written materials with a proven track record
of delivering mission critical projects on time, in scope and
within budget; experience in marketing, promotion and
