Job Description:
The Department of Physiology & Membrane Biology at the
University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire
one Junior Specialist in Dr. Cudmore's lab. This position will
undertake interdisciplinary research focusing on developing
software tools for the analysis and visualization of biological
imaging data. This includes the development of cloud based software
tools. We are particularly interested in developing software tools
for the analysis of 3D cellular resolution imaging data from
cutting-edge fluorescent microscopy experiments.
The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Robert Cudmore
and work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment.

1. RESEARCH (95% EFFORT) This position requires creative
contributions to an active research program developing a range of
software tools to analyze, visualize, and provide cloud based
computing. A major goal of the research is to improve the overall
quality and reproducibility of bio imaging research through
increased use of programming best practices including class
libraries, unit testing, distribution via containers, and both user
and advanced-programming-interface (API) documentation. The Junior
Specialist will help to determine research goals for defined
projects in regular consultation with the Principal
Investigator.
Candidates are expected to be proficient in Python programming and
have experience in or a willingness to learn JavaScript. This
includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of back-end
Python class libraries with an emphasis on data analysis and
visualization. In addition, the Junior Specialist will be involved
in the creation of cloud computing resources and
graphical-user-interfaces (GUIs) using front-end JavaScript.
This position also involves interaction with external collaborators
and lab members to assess and address research priorities and
needs, and presentation/participation in group meetings. This
position will allow significant involvement in publishable research
activities including reviewing journal articles and engaging in
discussions on research and the interpretation of research results.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to work both
independently and as part of a team in a growing and nurturing
research environment. -
2. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT) The Junior Specialist
may be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research
assistants that rotate through the lab. They will be expected to
participate and contribute to laboratory and group meetings, and
other activities, as applicable. -
