POSITION PURPOSE: The Schilling Robotics business unit develops complex electro-mechanical robotics and teleoperated vehicles for use in the deep ocean. The Machine Shop Supervisor manages a team of programmers and machinists to manufacture highly specialized prototype components and regular production parts for the manipulators and subsea systems. The Supervisor is responsible for motivating and developing employees to achieve outstanding manufacturing results, ensuring critical to quality standards while leveraging Continuous Improvement (Lean/TPS), improving individual skills, and enhancing teamwork. The supervisor works closely with product development engineering and production control to prioritize and execute to the Production and New Product Development schedules. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * Strong leadership, training, coaching, mentorship, and effective interpersonal skills gained through a minimum of five (5) years in a leadership or supervisory role. * Working knowledge of machining principles and also direct experience with all CNC operations, using a variety of metals and plastics, with a minimum of 10 years as a working CNC and Manual machinist. * Working knowledge of quality inspection principles and tools including non-contact instruments. * Working knowledge of reading engineering drawings and applying dimensioning methods as described in ANSI Y 14.5. * Working knowledge of finishing principles, tools and techniques. * Working knowledge of various OSV plating operations including anodize, nitric passivation, and electro-polishing. * Ability to provide feedback for manufacturability in design reviews. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated through writing various status reports, performance evaluations, and production documentation. * Strong independent judgment, reasoning, negotiating, and problem-solving skills utilized in a technical, operational, and personnel aspect. * Proficient in workload planning and scheduling in a fast past environment with competing priorities. * Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook). ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: * Responsible for directly supervising assigned staff, ensuring that they are performing their duties adhering to safety guidelines, quality standards, delivery times, and cost effectiveness. (SQDC) * Plan capacity and establish priorities and schedules for Prototype development as well as production requirements in a very dynamic environment where priorities can change hourly. * Owns managing and tracking performance to daily production goals and quality metrics ensuring accountability for results. * Resolve operational and manufacturing issues on the shift. * Ability to perform Manual Mill, Manual Lathe, CNC mill, and CNC lathe operations in order to help the team to problem solve, troubleshoot and execute on challenging assignments that the prototype team is often faced with and must overcome to move forward in the NPD process. * Works cross functionally and executes strong collaboration to solve product development issues. * Direct experience in or knowledge of TPS or lean manufacturing processes. * Responsible for analyzing data and implementing corrective actions to promote safety and continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility. * Ensure the appropriate resources are hired and skills, knowledge, and abilities are developed to meet business requirements while providing direct and indirect performance feedback. * Establish and sustain effective relationships with all employees in order to foster an environment where innovation and cooperation are used to support prototype development. * Conduct regular team meetings which include effective communication. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: * While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and arms to perform repetitive motions; to sit, talk, and/or hear. * Ability to wear proper PPE for machine shop environment such as steel toed boots, safety glasses and ear protection. * Standing on concrete floors for long periods and frequent sitting is required. * Frequently subjected to interruptions and multiple calls and inquiries.
