Job Description:

The Public Safety Dispatchers, provide 24-hour, 7 days-per-week emergency and non-emergency Public Safety Dispatch service for the UC Davis campus and Medical Center in Sacramento.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, operate as a primary point of contact for both the Davis campus and Medical Center in Sacramento for life or property emergencies and general police/fire services. Use a Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) to dispatch and track various levels of calls for service and public safety resources. Inquire into the Records Management System and support the police records unit after business hours; utilize the Mobile Data System and Mapping Software as it pertains to tracking resources; inquire/enter/update or modify data in the California Law Enforcement Telecommunication System(CLETS); operate technically advanced and complex alarm computer systems, operate complex radio console, utilize various computerized applications, operate video display terminal, answer and handle the E911 Public Safety Answering Point. Independently determine level of emergency response and coordinate police/fire/ambulance services as well as other resources as needed or required. Function autonomously but under the general supervision of the Dispatch Supervisor or the Director of Administrative and Support Division. In the absence of the Dispatch Supervisor or the Director functional supervision is provided by the on-duty patrol supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

* Work in a confined area and cannot leave job site for meals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

* Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the following:-POST required background investigation including criminal history and identity check.
* POST required pre-placement medical exam-POST required pre-placement psychological exam.
* Complete and pass within 12 months from date of hire, the Department of Justice (DOJ) California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) training.
* Completion of the UCDPD Communications Training Program.-12-month probationary period.
* Alternate work schedule (shift work).
* Work holidays, weekends and overtime on short notice.
* Required to wear a uniform.
* UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

* CA POST Dispatcher Certificate and/or CA POST Entry Level Test letter with score of 50 or better.
* Lateral applicants must possess a current valid California POST Dispatcher Certificate which is awarded to employees who have satisfactorily completed the POST Public Safety Dispatchers' Basic Course and completion of probation as a public safety dispatcher during previous employment
* Entry Level applicants who meet the remaining minimum qualifications but do not already possess a current valid POST Dispatcher Certificate will be required to take the current California POST Dispatcher Entry Level Test administered by the UC Davis Police Department (date TBD) with a passing T-score of 50 or better to be considered for an interview.
* Or submit a letter from a POST Dispatcher testing agency showing that you have taken and passed the POST Dispatcher Entry Level Exam with a T-Score of 50 or higher within years 2019/2021 to be considered for an interview.
* Applicants that do not possess a current Post Dispatcher Certificate and successfully pass the POST Dispatcher Entry Level test must successfully complete the POST Dispatcher Certificate Program within 12 months from the date of hire.

Minimum Education/Experience:

* Experience in making independent and complex decisions.
* Experience in documentation of information and maintaining records.
* Computer experience using word processing, spreadsheets, database programs, etc.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

* Type 40 WPM
* Skills to multi-task and communicate effectively with numerous interruptions and noise.
* Skills to understand, interpret and apply complex policies, codes, laws and procedures, and effectively and accurately communicate that information to others.
* Interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship in a customer service driven environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

* Experience working in a medium sized 9-1-1 Public Safety Dispatch Center
* Experience or exposure to the public safety field.
* Experience working under considerable pressure, caused by emergency situations.
* Experience in the use of Teletype System (CLETS).
* Experience in the use of a computerized radio systems and knowledge of radio codes that are governed by FCC regulations.
* Experience in the use of an E911 system; different telephone systems and multiline sets; Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
