Job Description:
Under general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, provide
support to the Diagnostic Clinical Laboratories and act as a
central point of delivery and shipment of samples. Specimens will
be accessioned, processed and sent to the appropriate laboratory
for further processing or sent out to reference laboratories.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two
weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior
to the removal date. POSITION INFORMATION Salary Range

Maneuver/lift equipment and materials
weighing up to 50 pounds. May require standing for extended periods
of time. May be required to wear protective clothing for extended
periods of time. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Specific hazards of the position are
listed in the VMTH Safety Training document and are reviewed with
the incumbent annually. Work under Medical Surveillance procedures
and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and
Regulations and University Policy. May require working with or
around areas with hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases.
Occasional overtime, work variable hours/days on short notice,
weekends and/or holidays. Availability to work 8 to 10 hour shifts.
Work in a busy hospital laboratory and teaching environment.
QUALIFICATIONS Required:
Experience working in a diagnostic
laboratory setting as a hospital lab assistant or hospital lab
technician.
Experience with sterile technique to
prepare uncontaminated solutions and specimens for microbiological
analysis and with different anticoagulants used for collecting
diagnostic specimens.
Knowledge of processing protocols to
provide coverage to the evening shift as a single technician by
providing technical coverage and oversight of all hospital samples.
Skills to process blood, urine,
fecal, bone marrow and tissue samples for all areas of the
Diagnostic Laboratories.
Oral and written communication and
interpersonal skills and diplomacy to interact with a diverse group
of people: faculty, clients, residents, researchers, students, and
staff regarding samples.
